S.H.I.T.
Erica dropped into a seat at the bar. It had been an exceptionally long day and, really, she didn’t even like Palo Alto that much but she was out here for a conference and barely knew anyone (and that everyone at the conference was horrifically boring).
Out of nowhere, a man dropped into the previously vacant seat next to her.
“Hi,” he said, sounding entirely more slick than she was comfortable with. “I’m Sean Parker.”
She narrowed her eyes at him. “Am I supposed to have heard of you or something?”
“Oh,” he says, clearly taken aback that she didn’t recognize his name. “Uh, I guess not.”
During the awkward pause that followed his statement, he attempted to flag down the bartender. “Can I buy you a drink?” he asked Erica, smiling in a way that he clearly thought was charming, but that mostly looked smarmy.
“That depends,” Erica answered. “Are you going to stay here while I drink it? Because I could really use a drink, but so far I’m not wild about your company.”
Sean put a hand over his heart and faked agony, saying “Oh that just cuts to the soul,” and trailing off in such a way that it’s clear he’s expecting her to provide her name.
And he was kind of smarmy but also kind of funny and cute, so she did give him her first name.
But then she looked over his shoulder across the bar and saw a familiar figure, all curly hair and slouching shoulders and hoodies.
“Shit,” she said out loud.
“Is everything okay?” Sean asked her, seeming surprisingly genuine in his concern.
“My ex is over there,” Erica replied. “And the last time I saw him, it was not pretty.”
“Which one’s your ex?” Sean craned his neck, completely unsubtle in his attempt to look at the variety of men behind him.
“Oh,” Erica said, “He’s the one trying to flirt with the pretty blonde almost directly behind you?”
“Shit,” Sean said, echoing her earlier tone almost exactly.
Erica frowned at him. “What’s the problem for you?”
“Well,” Sean said, looking deeply concerned, “That’s my former boss trying to pick up one of my old hook-ups.”
“You know Mark?” Erica asked, completely dumbfounded.
“Wait,” Sean said, “You know Mark?”
“Oh my god, do you work for Mark?” she asked, horrified.
Sean nodded curtly. “Well, I used to. I kind of got fired.”
“I—oh god, I can’t do this,” Erica babbled. “I’m not going to sit around and flirt with the former employee of a guy who trashed me on the internet.”
“Oh my god,” Sean said, suddenly looking at her in an entirely different way. “You’re the girl he wanted to impress.”
Erica got up and moved to walk away, because things were just getting entirely too weird, but she wasn’t quick enough. Mark turned around and tried to catch Sean’s eye and, in the process, noticed her. His face turned an unflatteringly blotchy white, and he looked away quickly. Then, though, the blonde spun around, examining the area behind her and blanched when she saw Sean.
But when the blonde’s eyes landed on Erica, she smiled a little. Erica smiled back and then jerked her head at Sean and mouthed, “Is he a loser?”
The blonde smirked and mouthed back, “Kind of, but he’s a decent lay,” and Erica felt herself blush a little. The other girl turned back to Mark and said something to him, Erica didn’t know what, but then she stood up and walked toward Erica.
Before she got there, Erica caught her eye and looked pointedly at the other end of the bar. The blonde nodded once, and followed Erica to a couple of unoccupied stools out of Sean’s line of sight. As she settled into one of them, she heard a voice next to her say, “So I’m Amy.”
“I’m Erica,” she said, already entirely more comfortable with the person sitting next to her than she had been with Sean.
“So,” Amy said, grinning, “Can I buy you a drink? I noticed you didn’t stick around long enough to get the one I’m sure Sean offered you.”
Erica looked at Amy, who was still smiling and who was also kind of stunningly pretty, and said, “Sure, as long as you’ll hang out while I drink it.”
Amy gave her a look that was decidedly flirty, her eyes lingering on Erica’s lips for a moment. “You really couldn’t get rid of me at this point.”
“I’m really okay with that,” Erica replied.
A drink later, Amy was trying to kiss her and flag at cab at the same time, one arm wrapped tight around Erica’s waist and the other flailing widly and uselessly towards the street.
Erica pulled back. “We’re never going to get a cab this way.”
“I know,” Amy replied, grinning. “But I don’t really want to stop kissing you, either.”
