Ends
We can’t see each other any more.
The words echoed around her head, ricocheting off the sides off her skull.
I can’t lie any more, Lara. If you’re not willing to let me come clean with my friends, this has to end.
It had gotten her again. Her damned paranoia that someone would find her out: that someone would want to prosecute her for what she’d done. Why hadn’t she been happy with the forgiveness of the one person who truly mattered?
I’m sorry.
Of course he was sorry—that was how he was. He was a good man. He didn’t want to be breaking her heart. But he was too honest to keep up the charade, to lie to his friends and to those who had once been hers.
I love you,
And she loved him, too. She loved him for being able to look beyond her past, to see that she wasn’t a cold-blooded murderer.
